Before you make your choice, however, take the time to find out why these two letters could literally change the way you think about driving.
What does the ST in Ford ST stand for?
You'll understand that this is a more muscular, more powerful version of the vehicles. ST is the abbreviation of Sport Technologies. So you can tell from these letters that your vehicle will retain its exceptional driving characteristics, but will add a little muscle.
The ST name is not new. In fact, it appeared on Ford vehicles as early as the 1997 Ford Mondeo ST24, it wasn't until 2008, with the Ford Fiesta ST, that the Sport Technologies designation became an integral part of Ford's annual offering.
This is not to be confused with the RS designation, which was notably used on Ford's latest performance Focus. RS stands for Rallye Sport, a version that is definitely more radical than any other in its class.
And as you may have gathered, the name RS is a real tribute to rally cars, especially the RS1600, which has won numerous victories on the world rally circuit.
Not to be confused with the ST-Line
ST vehicles are complete performance packages. They feature a more muscular silhouette, additional aerodynamic elements, and interior enhancements. And under the hood, the engine purrs more insistently.
There is, however, a less powerful version called the ST-Line. Ford vehicles with this designation only offer interior and exterior upgrades. Basically, they have the same aerodynamic elements as the ST proper, both inside and out. Their mechanics, however, are completely unaffected. That's not to say that these models aren't interesting, as the Edge ST-Line still offers a 250-horsepower engine!
So if you're in the mood for an SUV that keeps its all-around qualities, that's capable of acting like a true family vehicle, but gives you a little more under the hood, consider the Ford Explorer or the Ford Edge ST.
